SURVIVAL RATING - EXCELLENT
New from Alps Mountaineering for 2014 is the redesigned Caldera 4500 Internal Frame Backpack. The new Caldera 4500 makes an excellent main Bug Out Bag.
Rough and tough, the Caldera 4500 features and easily adjustable suspension system, front and side pockets, and a hydration pocket and port. There are also side compression straps, an internal horizontal divider and extra large #10 zippers on the bottom "door". Extra gear to pack? No problem. The top of the Caldera 4500 extends with a spindrift collar, so you can "over pack." The top pocket also adjusts up and down to keep it in the optimal position and an "Over the Top" compression strap stabilizes any extra gear.
Another nice feature of the Caldera 4500 is that the top lid converts to a fanny pack, which allows you to make short forays without taking the entire pack with you. For wet weather, a full rain cover is included.
The bottom line? If you're in the market for a budget friendly Backpack to use as a main Bug Out Bag, take a good look at the Alps Caldera 4500.
